Tips from the Pros

A lot goes into maintaining a beautiful, lush, green lawn. If you are a home improvement weekend warrior and feeling up to the challenge, here are some tips from the pros.

Topics covered: Fertilization, Tick Control, Overseeding, Spring Prep and Watering Your Lawn.

Fertilization:

  • Which type of fertilizer, the timing and rate of applications, and areas you apply fertilizer to are all very important to be mindful of if you do this on your own.
  • Consider performing a soil test to determine which nutrients your lawn might be lacking and if lawn is too acidic or too basic. In Connecticut, our soil tends to be acidic. A lawn care professional can help you with recommendations once results are in.

  • Ticks live in shady areas with leaf or brush coverage.

  • When treating for ticks, starting with the woods line, spray from about 5ft in the lawn to 15ft into the woods.

Broadcast Seeding or Overseeding:

  • Seeding can help thicken a lawn, fill bare spots and improve resistance to diseases and pests.

  • When seeding, be sure to always establish good seed to soil contact. This can be achieved by working seeds in with a garden weasel, or having a professional help you with Triple Core Aeration & Seeding.

Watering Your Lawn:

  • Water is an essential to a happy, healthy yard. When you water and how much you water can greatly effect results.

  • Most lawns need around 1 inch of water per week whether its coming from rain or watering.

  • If you need to water your lawn, be sure to do it in the morning. Watering too late in the day will not allow your lawn to dry and will promote the growth of diseases and fungus.
