Spring Seeding vs Fall Seeding

Is your lawn looking a little patchy and bare?  Is it the beginning of Spring and you are beginning to focus on your lawn again?  Seeding is often thought of as a Spring service but we are going to explain why most professional lawn care companies do not perform spring seedings.

Grass seed that is planted in spring will germinate and have great access to moisture for about 3-4 weeks but it will not have enough time to develop the strong root system needed to stand up to summer's pressures of heat, drought and potential disease stress.

Fall seeding, on the other hand, gives the new plants 3 wet/cool seasons to develop before the heat and disease pressures of summer are here.

Fall Seeding:

  • Timing: mid August - mid October in Northeast for cool season grasses.
  • Soil is warm from summer months, perfect for seed germination.
  • A wiser investment. This job will be done right, in a proper time window, and will be more likely to “stick” and give you desired results.
  • Roots will establish fully in fall, leading to a quick and successful green-up come Spring.

Spring Seeding:

  • Lawn is prone to collapsing in summer and requiring a re-seeding in fall.

  • Grass will grow rapidly on the surface using up significant energy and nutrients in the process. The roots, therefore, don't get what they need to build strength for the upcoming Summer.
  • Younger lawns are more prone to diseases.
  • Poor investment.  You might spend $$$ on a seeding job only for the grass to all die once summer comes.
  • New grass has to compete with overwintering weeds like crabgrass that can be aggressively emerging in Spring.

While there may be companies who might sell you Spring seeding, we are here to let you know that this might not be the most ideal service for you.  We understand that it might be hard to wait until fall to seed but we can promise that the outcome is worth it and you will be happy with your results.  Seeding in fall is the wiser investment for you.
