Easy Ways to Reduce Mosquitoes in my Yard
Did you know that there are 18 different species of mosquitos in Connecticut and over 3,000 different species in the world? Learn about about how to control mosquito populations in your yard.
DO:
- Use a fan to disrupt their ability to fly when outside.
- Eliminate standing water on your property.
- Store any bucket or product that can hold water upside down.
- Change water in bird baths weekly.
- Unclog gutters.
- Empty kid's pools.
- Change water in dog dish frequently.
- Grow pest-repelling plants such as lemongrass.
- Set up bat houses (a bat can eat from 500-1000 mosquitos per hour).
- Attract birds and dragonflies (predators of mosquitos).
- Mow or trim any tall grasses around the property.
- Put a water fountain in ponds to keep the water moving.
- Populate a pond with minnows (they feed on mosquito larvae).
DON'T:
- Leave buckets right side up so they can collect water.
- Leave algae on ponds.
- Leave water puddled in garbage can lids.
- Repel bats away from your house.
- Leave dirty water in bird bath for weeks.
- Leave tall grass around house or property
- Leave gutters clogged with leaves and other debris.
- Let brush and tree limbs grow excessively (mosquitoes favor shady areas).
- Block sun from your yard (sun helps dry out any wet areas for potential breeding grounds).
- Let your pool water sit and not keep up with the water treatment schedule.
