The best weed control is a healthy lawn:
A lawn that is thick and lush can stand up to weed invasions. It is hard for weeds to invade a turf that is well watered, fertilized and mowed. Weeds are opportunistic - the healthier your lawn is, the more resistant it is to weeds.
Prevent weeds from spreading in your lawn
- Hire a professional lawn care company to apply pre emergents and post emergents. A good lawn care company will visit make service calls if you have problems between your scheduled services.
- Hedges or fences can act as a barrier for wind blown seeds such as dandelions.
- Encourage a healthy lawn with regular watering, mowing and fertilizing.
- Aerate and over seed your lawn with grass types that are aggressive and will fill out gaps or areas that get easily invaded with weeds.
Different generations of weeds:
-
Summer Annual Weeds vs Winter Annual Weeds
- There are 2 different generations of weeds. Winter annual weeds germinate from seed in the fall and die off by late Spring/early Summer. Summer annual weeds flower during the summer and die in late summer/early fall. Winter annuals include chickweed, clover, ground ivy, dandelions and more. Summer annuals include nutsedge, crabgrass, goose weed, knot weed and more.
-
Pre-emergent herbicides vs post-emergent herbicides
- Many lawn care companies will use a combination of pre-emergent and post-emergent weed control. Pre emergents prevent weeds from growing, post emergents kill weeds after they have sprouted. For some weeds, there's no such thing as pre-emergent treatment for them so we have to spray for them once them emerge.
